Private adoptions? Can they be arranged in the UK? How do you go about doing this?

I am 2 months pregnant and am looking to adopt the baby when I have it. I am uncertain about the procedure involved in this and would be grateful for any advice.

I would be gratfeul if people were not to be judgmental as I had intended to have a termination before reaching this decision, and felt that adoption was the better option.

  1. Private adoptions are illegal in this country. You have to go  through a local authority or authorised agency. This site will help you understand the process.

  2. Good on you. And anyone who has nothing nice to say to you , just ignore it. I would suggest talking to your health care provider or the like and they will be able to direct you. Other than that phone around different adoption agencies to find which one is right for you.  Good luck.  :)

  3. Private adoptions are illegal in the UK.  You should get in touch with your local social services dept and talk to them about relinquishing your baby.

Adoptions here differ hugely to those in the USA and open adoptions are exactly that.  Your child will know who you are and you will be encouraged to have some form of contact with your child.

If you need any more help or info, feel free to email me.

  4. Private adoptions are illegal in the UK, and the only way you would be able to have your child adopted would be to go through your local department of social services (you have a 3 month period after the babies birth to decide whether or not you still want the child to be adopted still).

If you wanted to, then social services may be able to arrange for you to have 'letterbox contact' which is where you are able to write letters to your child, and its adoptive parents will choose when to let the child view the letters and the adoptive family could also send you letters about your child's progress (although they are not obliged to do this after the adoption has been finalised).

May I just say that i think you are very brave to consider putting your child up for adoption, and so please ignore anyone who has given you negative comments about choosing to have your child adopted.

  5. No, private adoptions are illegal in the UK

You would need to contact the Department of Social Services, children and families division

The baby will be placed with foster carers and you can visit as much as you would like for about 6 weeks without potential adoptive parents breathing down you neck.  Nobody knows how they will feel until the baby is born and this is time for you to make your final decision.

After the 6 weeks I think the baby can be placed with potential adopters, but you still have another 3 months before the adoption is final

  6. Contact the DSS or the citizens advise bureau who can give you all the correct information.
