Question:

Private coach for figure skating?

I just started figure skating and I'm 14, so I wanted to get a private coach so I could progress faster since I'm starting at a late age. I have taken group lessons, but I'm not learning as fast as I want to. I'm having trouble finding a coach in the Twin Cities area (Minnesota) like in St. Paul or Minneapolis, but no more than 30-40 minutes from St. Paul or Minneapolis. Thanks!

  1. Is your goal the Olympics or to be a serious recreational skater? And the reason why I ask that is because if your coach is a serious Olympic type coach then it will cost alot. But if your coach is a recreational skater coach then it won't cost that much. So from your previous questions you say your at basic stroking and gliding I think continue on with gruop lessons but thats your choice. And which ever coach you pick always check the coaches credentials so you can find out if that coach is the coach for you.

P.S:  My private coach charges me $80 for a one hour lesson.(She's an olympic type coach)

    good luck

  2. I was a figure skater for 9 years until I had to have knee surgery due to multiple blows to the knee from smacking the ice. It was amazing, I loved every part of it, the bruises, the long hours, the competitions, everything. I had a private coach, one thing I do know is it is hard to find a coach that will want to work with a late starter. I started at 7, which is ideal cause you can start forming good posture, good habits, gracefulness all of that. Where as at 14 you kind of already have your own way of doing it all.  Stay in the group lessons until you find a coach, they really do help. I hope you have good luck, it was the best 9 years of my life. Skate a couple rounds for me, do some jumps and spins (those were my favorite) cause I can never skate again. Best of luck to ya! Check with your local ice rink they should be able to give ya some names.

  3. If you're at a club see if they have a list of available caoches, mine do. And look around at your community center to see if you can join a club, if you're not in one already.
