Private first class us army?

Question

i was looking up my grandpas rank from when he was in the army during wwII and it said he was pfc us army.

what exactly does that rank mean and its responsibilities at that time?

Now days it is the 3rd rank from the bottom. In todays military PFCs do not have alot of responsibility althoug during WWII I know of Machine Gunners being PFCs. So during that era they had alot more responsibility thAN NOW.

It is the second lowest rank next to Private. & not really any responsiblities.
