Question:

Private insurance help.........?

hay everyone...i need to ask you all a favor...i recently started a new ob ant they work with private ins such as oxford, signa, aetna, etc.. i have no idea about them ... i want to know if there is a website or something that would help me learn about them , and to find out which ins need refferals, and what exactly means to be in or out of network,.... please help as soon as posible.

  1. You want to learn about who?  If it's the insurance company, go to their website.  If it's the doctor, go to THEIR website.


  2. There is no way to answer your question with any certainty. Oxford, Cigna and Aetna all have different plans and if your company is large enough the plan may be tailored just for them.

    Generally, you'll have the option of either a PPO or HMO. The HMO will require referrals from your primary care doctor to see a specialists. PPO plans don't require a referral  but there still may be pre-authorization needed for many procedures.

    Both types have a network, which is a group of doctors, hospitals, and other facilities. With an HMO you usually can't go outside the network. With a PPO you do have the option to go outside the network, i.e., to any doctor, but your costs will be higher and you may have a separate deductible.

    You'll need to visit your HR department for full details.
