Question:

Pro-Lifers: Is the Morning After pill considered abortion?

I'm not looking to instigate a fight or anything, I'm genuinly curious. Is the morning after pill considered an abortion? It has to be taken within 72 hours of sexual intercourse and the woman's body doesn't even register that is pregnant until 72 hours and after. From what I understand, its made to work before the body actually becomes pregnant and works a lot like birth control. The active ingredients, progestin prevents the sperm from reaching the egg and keeps a fertilized egg from attaching to the wall of the uterus (implantation). Estrogen stops the ovaries from releasing eggs (ovulation) that can be fertilized by sperm. So really the woman doesn't even become pregnant to start with.

So is it considered an abortion? And if so, is birth control also viewed as a type of abortion?

  1. Facepalm...the rhythm method?? statistically works just as well as the pull out method.  If your not worried about getting pregnant go for it...the rest of the world needs something a little more reliable.

Pro choice....and personally i wouldn't take this pill. yet they are talking about making it OTC!!!  All i can think of it teenage girls..popping it like candy every weekend O.O

  2. most do, yes.

some even consider IUDs & other birth control methods under the same umbrella.

edit: they "rhythm method" only works if you have a *predictable* cycle. for those of us with random cycles, doesn't help too much.

[i got pregnant without even menstruating for 4 months prior]

  3. "and keeps a fertilized egg from attaching to the wall of the uterus (implantation). "

Yes the morning after pill is abortion and yes birth control pills are too.

Anything that interfers once the sperm hits the egg is abortion.

  4. I usually consider pregnancy (and therefore life) to begin once the zygote is implanted, so if you take a pill that prevents the egg from implanting in the uterus then no, to me its not abortion, but if you go a month after you get pregnant and remove the gestating baby, then it is

  5. Think all the geniuses we could have had if everyone had unprotected s*x every day.

  6. no...

deepthroatdebbie or whatever ur name is....

nevermind....im really not in the mood to fight right now...I shall let you to keep your opinions right now.

  7. i am pro-life and I believe destroying a fertilized egg is murder, however not allowing the sperm to reach the egg is not murder.

  8. I believe it is. I believe that life begins the moment the sperm meets the egg. Whether taking a pill to terminate it's life or having a full blown abortion, it is still preventing the child from coming into this world. It is abortion.

EDIT @ Jazz: We don't consider all birth control abortion. I consider SOME to be because they can kill the fertilized egg. The ones that prevent ovulation are just not letting the egg get fertilized. If the egg isn't fertilized, it isn't a baby.

EDIT @ Molly B: That is what my husband and I are using now....well trying to! lol!

EDIT @ Twilight: While you're making fun of us, I thought I'd correct you. The earth is 6000 years old. If you are going to continue with this, you might need to actually know how old we think the earth is.

  9. this question is a trip straight into the dark ages.

unbelievable the earth is 6000 years old .we have translated hieroglyphics from Mexico that are 36.000 years old  ,and some from Sumeria that are much older .

there was a civilization in the Amazon 150.000 years ago

And the first Anunaki landing is dated at 300.000 years ago .

not to speak of the Dinosaurs

    Are you people for real????

How can you murder an unborn.or even  unfertilized eggs ,

what about the billions of sperms most men kill during the course of the week

    .

    or boys involuntary whilst asleep

    .Are they sleeping sinners ???

And  where does this idea of ,thou shalt not kill come from in the first place???,

From a religion that acts like a death cult, worshipping death,a dead person on a dead tree ,symbolically eating his flesh and drinking his blood, and selling the idea, that mans best moment will be  when he is dead in paradise ,

What about the millions who have died in the name of the lord.??

These people against abortion tend to come from countries that bomb thousands of women and children across the seas

What about the millions of orphans walking around ,we should take care of them first ,before we consider breeding with out control.

i was in Ouaxaca where they are destroying the climate ,rivers and country side with over steep maize plots to feed the families of between 15 to 20 children each ,because the Pope said they could not use birth control

The condoms i handed out where retrieved by the Church

but i do not see the Pope feeding the families ,he leaves them alone with the problems

an young unborn fetus is an empty vessel,an organic machine ,the spirit enters later.

if one kills this machine ,the spirit will enter another one later that is perhaps more welcome and will live in better conditions

What about the pressing problem of a global population explosion

.Double n the last 50 years and treble in a few years from now

You people who are against abortion have the mentality of a Plague ,this world cannot handle all results of s*x being born, and would be over run by humanity in no time ,

We would become cannibals again,or start sacrificing humans to the Gods

    .

There would not be enough food ,fresh water ,or suitable living space

The whole planet would end with  everybody  fighting for survival

Why do you think the Gods(who our leaders represent) have so many wars??

to keep the populations down so that they could be more easily controlled apart from the financial benefits.

There are two moments when extinction becomes a possibility

when there are too few ,but more often when there are too many

It is against the Law of Nature ,the Law of equilibrium .,

All life all species of Flora and fauna ,abide by this ,only so many as the eco systems permit in terms of space and food supply

    Long live abortion

    birth control .Family planning

    and good sense

    and down with hypocrisy.

and insane suicidal notions of breeding ourselves in to a global disease

and we may have a chance to survive as a specie

  10. My understanding is that the Plan B pill is one that will kill the sperm before they reach the egg - its a lot of hormones to put into your body, which is unhealthy, but no it is not abortion.

I had a girlfriend take it and she was already pregnant and so it did nothing.

There are some birth controls that will cause an abortion, and you don't even know it happened - IUDs and such. Some oral contraceptives can potentially do this, too.

  11. Pro Life=

    Anti Choice

    Anti Education

    Anti s*x

    Pro Punish the rape victim

    Pro Teen Pregnancy

  12. No on both, in my view. If a sperm and egg merely meet and unite, before they begin to gorw after implantation on the uterine wall, it is not a life form and therefore there's no abortion. Only when implantation has happened, and the entity is using food, growing, etc., is it considered alive. (By me, anyway. I may not be typical of those who call themselves "Pro Life.)

Regular birth control is not abortion. It would be CRAZY to forbid abortion and also forbid any means that make abortion unnecessary. Most of the reason I don't like abortion is that there are ways to avoid pregnancy totally, INCLUDING changing the form of sexual activity engaged in (oral cannot make babies).

  13. I was given the morning after pill when I was assaulted. I don't see it that way - as murder. I saw it as one aspect of keeping my already fragile sanity.

  14. I think pro-lifers consider ANY type of birth control murder and evil. What's ironic about that however is that if more people were to become responsible and use birth control, unwanted pregnancies would drop and as a result abortion rates would drop as well. Wouldn't that make them happy?

  15. no, I don't consider it abortion and I'm prolife. It is a HORRIBLE drug though.

  16. The morning after pill actually prevents ovulation and possibly prevents implantation, but that's really debatable. You see, sperm lives in the body for a few days after s*x and if a woman ovulates during that time, she may become pregnant. The morning after pill, will prevent that ovulation and possibly if she has already ovulated, it will prevent implantation and thus prevent pregnancy although that's the theory of it, no one is entirely sure if that happens. Remember, you're only ovulating and thus fertile for a very short time.

People who think that the morning after pill is abortion are wrong, not that it really matters anyways since the right to have an abortion is not wrong.

(Edit: Plan B is over the counter here in Canada and no, teenage girls do not pop it like it's candy, but then again, maybe young Canadian women are smarter than the average American girl.)

  17. Yes, also the Earth is flat and only 4000 years old...while we are on the subject.
