* We will no longer have to parole violent felons from prison to make room for drug users

* Police will be able to shift all the resources that go to finding and prosecuting drug users and focus on violent thieves, rapists, and murderers.

* Drug Prices will plummet, therefore, theft by drug users will plummet as well since they need less money to support their habit

* Drug Dealers will no longer carry out turf wars and drive by shootings once drugs can be legally provided

* There is no incentive to get your children hooked on drugs or selling drugs. By reducing the profits that can be made from selling drugs, children and teenagers are more likely to get a legitimate job because more money can be made in that job

* The War on Drugs is over and we lost.

  1. Why stop there?

    * Tax and regulate prostitution.  Our society says a woman has a 'right to choose' to kill her fetus, but not to shake her money maker for $20?

    * Issue 'tax cheat' permits.  Let rich people buy a permit to legally cheat on their taxes, so they can s***w the government over without us having to worry about all of that prosecution stuff.

    * Legalize murder, and issue 'murder permits'.  Hey, we will no longer have to have all of those pesky trials and executions if we just legalize killing.  Plus, all of those gangs can make their drive-by shootings legal if they have a permit.

You get the point... Society has laws and rules that the majority of us want enforced.  We've decided that drugs are one of these things that we don't want in our culture and it's worth spending the money to prosecute the things that are abhorrent to us.  Ever been to Amsterdam?  Trust me... you'd change your mind on this subject if you had.

  2. I wouldn't use drugs as recreation even if they were legal! But I'll agree with the words you wrote. But you have missed a few things in you report. Along with the points you made, there is also the benefit of extra tax money that could be directed to the school systems. Legal drugs would have to be monitored for quality, so there would be a new job market and clean, standard dosage drugs would be available.

All in all, as said, the war on drugs would be over, only most people would win.

  3. points against: the cost to the public of to take care of those who are not contributing because of their drug use

if there are no public support structures such as rehab and training programs, i do not object

if you want to use drugs with my approval, you can, provided that you do not interfere with my life or work, and if you do not expect me to assist in preserving or improving your useless life

  4. law Enforcement would fall apart. Druggies are the easiest people in the world to arrest; they just sit around. They can snatch them up by the bus load. Arrest, sentence, privatized prison, take orders for internet stores, and the good taxpayer pays the freight. Imagine all these stores having to actually hire people and pay real money. Simply won't do. And imagine cops having to catch genuine criminals. I won't even go there.

  5. Does Legalization increase consumption?

I don't know how legalization affected the consumption of controlled substances. It does make their use more widely accepted. I might be ready to accept pot smoking as a norm,, shooting Heroin is something else.

Legalizing gambling certainly made to more common place. Ever hear of the "numbers racket" it's basically the lotto except that's illegal and run by the mob.  Gambling is one of those things people can destroy their lives with. (like Alcohol and other things)

Does the State have a responsibility to protect dumb @sses from themselves?

But for the most part your argument is solid. The highest crime rate in United States History was in the 1920's. A great deal of the violence was gangs fighting each other for turf. The two biggest money makers for the old time Mafia are legal now. The numbers racket (Super Lotto) and alcohol.
