Pro snowboarder Travis Rice nominated for 2012 Adventurer of the Year Award by National Geographic
American professional snowboarder Travis Rice has been selected by National Geographic to be listed among the nominations for the 2012 People Choice Adventurer of the Year Award, an honour which acknowledges the achievements of an adventurer in exploration,
conservation and adventure sports.
The winner of the Adventurer of the Year Award is going to be determined by the results of the poll that is currently running on the website of National Geographic. Visitors of the site and fans of Rice can help take their favourite action sport athlete
to victory by voting in his favour daily through January 18, 2012.
The 29-year-old Rice convinced National Geographic to place him in contention for the 2012 Adventurer of the Year Award through a display of outstanding skills and style in the highly anticipated big mountain snowboarding film ‘The Art of Flight’. The film
is said to be snowboarding’s crossover from hardcore audience to mainstream audience, allowing both the factions to reap satisfaction out of the movie without finding the action too complicated or too blatant.
Rice co-produced the movie with Curt Morgan and Chad Jackson of Brain Farm Digital Cinema. The movie saw the American snowboarder unload the mind-blowing yet risky aerial tricks at the peaks of big mountains, where a slightest mishap could lead to fatality,
unlike the X Games and Olympics environment where the conditions are relatively controlled and proper safety measures are in place.
The wonderful cinematography of Morgan caught the magic of Rice and brought it to screen in crystal clear quality, allowing the viewers to enjoy the details of perfectly executed tricks in perfect light.
While talking to a reporter from a leading news network about the snowboarding film and the reason for making it as real as possible, Rice said, “Experiencing the world through endless second-hand information isn’t enough, If we want authenticity we have
to initiate it.”
Some might regard the risk taken by Rice as un-called for, but someone with an eye for adventurous spirit can easily see it for what it really is; a desire for the action sports athlete to express himself in complete freedom.
The results of the poll for determining 2012 People’s Choice Adventurer of the Year Award will be announced in February.
