Hi everyone. When I turn on the computer, the desktop loads as normal but whenever I click on an icon on my desktop, it won't open and sometimes freezes and if i click on start, it just doesn't load up. Also, the time freezes too but I can still move my cursor around despite all of this. Can anyone suggest or know what I could do to fix it?

P.S I used my brother's computer to ask this question.

  1. its a difficult question to answer with such limited info, but try to start the computer in safe mode, this will help diagnose whether its a program causing trouble when you start up, or if it is something a little more serious. to start your computer in safe mode, press F8 key repeatedly when you reboot the computer. you must press it before windows begins to load. if done correctly, you will get a menu where you can choose to enter safe mode. please do so, and try clicking your icons and starting some programs. if you are able to do that, please edit this question info so i can help you further.

    good luck ^_^

  2. sounds as though it cannot read from the hard disk. boot from your system cd, select the repair / recover console option then type logon to access your system, then type chkdsk /r this will take a while but should hightlight and repair any disk problems

  3. Not enough information to guess

It might be hardware or it might be the operating system.

What OS is this on -- Windows XP? ME? 98? OSX?

    What hardware is it?

  4. Hmmm...I would recommend you to reformat your computer. back-up your files. go to SAFE MODE then reformat after backing up.

    good luck!

  5. 1 Run CHKDSK, it restores missing files.

    and

2 Place the recovery CD into the tray, close the menu window when it shows, enter "sfc /scannow" into the run commands, it will scan the cd  replacing any missing or corrupt system files, keep clicking 'Retry' if your prompt untill the scan is complete.
