  1. Great answer Dare.

  2. Why are you asking this question here?  Because you were taught problem solving skills  You understand how to get information that you want.  Thinking critically about something and coming up with ideas for how to solve it is a skill we use constantly throughout our lives and is very difficult to function without.

As a teacher, I am perhaps most surprised by the situations in which my students do not have problem solving skills.  I watch children try to put puzzles together and rather than turn a piece, they just bang on it and are surprised when it doesn't work.

Students who develop problem solving skills do better in school and in life because they don't just give up if the answer is not obvious, they don't just guess, they attack it using their knowledge of related issues, strategies, ideas, etc.

  3. When you say problem solving are you referring to conflict resolution in working with youth?

If so- those skills need to be developed beginning at a very young age. If something isn't working--we need to know how to cope by using alternative methods. Yelling and using physical force doesn't work--so we need to learn other methods that are appropriate and DO work.

At  http://www.After-School-Care.com --a thread has been started on different methods of conflict resolution to use with children. The link is

Also, there is a book thread.  In it is an excellent post with a large list of books to help develop children's problem solving skills (story with message books) There is also a post of recommended books  for professionals working with children. The link is:

    Hope this helps.
