Question:

Problem With Families Honda Civic. Noise From Wheel?

'90 Civic. A couple days ago, I noticed a noise coming from the two front wheels. Anyway, I was listening and then I braked hard. It stopped. Then, accelerated, the noise came back and then starting braking lightly. And as you press the pedal, the noise increases. Kind of a screeching sound. Hmm... the pads haven't been replaced in a while so probably need some attention. Took the tires off, sprayed brake cleaner in there and then drove it about an hour later. Sounded good and nothing really was there. But then, a couple hours later, it started and the noise sounds worse when the pedal is pushed like the pads are indeed worn. This came out of nowhere. The car rides great, and nothing really seems bad. Just that noise. Anything you can think of? Let me know, thanks

  2. Your brake pads need replacing. SOON.

  3. take it to a mechanic!

  4. Some pads have a squealer built in to to warn the pads are getting low.  I don't think the civic ever had them.  When brakes squeek while not braking its usually a result of either a bad brake job (pad slapping) or lots of dust.  Oh and it can be just pain old low quality pads.

The squeaking to even grinding is a result of the pads just barely touching while driving and simply by making a turn, a slight lean in the road can make either come and go.  Check to see that the hub (wheels) are firm and do not move when you have the wheel off the ground the only movement should be basic spinning no  play when grabbing the to and bottom of the wheel and rocking it back a forth.

Also the calipers may need a rebuild from the fact the quad ring is not pulling the pad back far enough from the rotor.

  5. i have that car as my daily driver, i cannot complain. that noise can come from brake dust, or worn pads. if you take the pads off and locate the squealer tab, see of you have much pad left. if you have plenty , clean all of the mating surfaces and press on, if not get prepared to do a brake job ( it is not difficult) but it sounds like the brake dust problem. you can at this point clean all of the dust off  of the brake assemblies and relube the sliding points. i did this last year on a solara and got rid of a nasty noise.

  6. Your pads are worn and this is a built in warning system to let you know, and to get them replaced.
