Question:

Problem With Iron Supplements?

by  |  earlier

I was recently diagnosed with anemia and was told to take an iron supplement every day. It's only been a few days but I already feel better. One problem though: it's causing constipation. I don't want to use a laxative or stool softener. I've never used either before and I'm kind of scared to. I also don't want to stop using the iron, I was so tired I didn't get out of bed to do anything but use the bathroom. I was too tired to even brush my teeth or bathe. Does anyone know a solution? Thanks.

I'm putting it here because I understand anemia is more of a problem with women.

  1. Iron deficiency anemia is the most common nutrient deficiency in the world and most common among women.

The constipation from the iron pills is very normal. Constipation is the result of a lack of fiber and water in the diet. Iron pills tend to divert water supplies to the urine to excrete the non abosorbable amounts instead of this water going to the formation of f***s where it belongs. Solution? More fiber! Viscous fiber, like that found in celery and broccoli makes up the bulk of f***s and attracts water. Proper stools are larger and fluffy and are easily passed. Without the fiber stools are small and harder for the large intestine to work through. So add a few cups of broccoli to your next meal and avoid dairy products. Diary not only makes you more constipated... it makes it harder to absorb iron! Have some vitamin C with your iron, it improves absorption.

  2. There is a formulation of iron called ferrous gluconate (ferrous sulfate is the more common iron supplement prescribed) and its gentler on the stomach. You can try increasing your fiber intake to help with the constipation. Also, docusate is a stool softner which you can be prescribed which is not a laxative or stimulant and it can help too.
