Problem just started. When I change gear often the engine will rev up really fast and for no good reason when I depress the clutch. It seems dangerous. Any suggestions please? Thanks: David

  1. I've got the same, intermittent problem with my fiesta.

Apparently there is a potentialmeter (not sure if thats the correct spelling) that affects the revs on the car when you change gear.  It can be changed which is good news and can be disconnected without it affecting the engine if you choose too.

Mine is worse when its been raining for some reason!

  2. Could be a problem with the air or fuel intake.

check that your accelerator cable is not catching, & if it is NOT you will have to get an anylysis of your cars E.C.U carried out.

  3. The most likely cause of your fiesta over reving is down to the idle speed control valve which will be stuck in the open position. sometimes these can be cleaned but more often than not need replacement.

  4. sounds as though the accellerator cable could be sticking.you might not notice this when the engine is under load, but when you push the clutch in it would be free to rev up.

Try some wd40 around the throttle linkage

  5. Get the engine breathing system checked out.  My wife's Fiesta 'J', when we had it, did this and that was what the prob was.
