When troubleshooting, where should I check first for the cause of the problem?

  4. I suggest you become familiar with the ping test using command prompt.

    Ping the default gateway first to see if you have a connection to the router.  If you have a server, ping the server as well.  If these work, connection is successful to them and the LAN side is working properly.

    Next, check the internet by pinging your DNS server of your ISP; if successful, then ping yahoo.com to see if DNS is working as it should.  If all are positive, then you have connectivity.
