My guinea mother that i adopted gave birth 3 days ago. The babies are fine and growing. But the smallest one usually has her eyes closed with a lot of much around them. I gently clean them with water and then they stay open for a while...

please help.. i can take her to the vet in about 5 days when i get paid from work. any ideas to what the problem is? Any cures? i remember someone had a similar question on here once

  1. I remember my cousin's hat a baby cat and that was the same problem, but when we cleaned her eyes...(DONT GET SCARED) one  of the kitty's eye was gone...

But I don't think that happened to your guinea pig baby.

I do not know what happened. :)

  2. FIRST CALL VET TELL THEM THE PROBLEM THEY MIGHT LET YOU MAKE PAYMENT ON TIME. tRY TO PUT THE BABY RIGHT UO ON THE MOM t*t AND SEE IF IT WILL NURSE. THIRD TAKE THE MULCH OUT OF THE PEN ALTOGETHER AND JUST PUT IN PAPER TOWEL OR NEWSPAPER THAT WILL MAKE IT EASERY FOR ALL TO GET AROUND AND NO STICKING MULCH

  3. it just sounds like eye discharge in which case, it can wait

  4. If you can, take a look at her eye lashes, do they turn in? You may need to gently lift the eye lids to get a close/proper look.

If so, this is a condition called entropion, the eye lashes grow on the inside of the eye lid and scratch the eye ball causing discomfort, hence the discharge and the closed eyes.

It can be fixed with a fairly simple/minor operation, (operating is the only cure though!)

Carry on bathing and if possible apply some eye ointment to help lubricate, take her to the vet as soon as you can.

If it is entropion it isn't life threatening but is very uncomfortable.

If her eyelashes look normal then closed eyes are also a general sign that an animal is unwell and should be taken to the vets ASAP as guinea pigs go down hill when poorly very rapidly.

Look up entropion on the net.

    Good luck with her.

  5. Even if you can't take her the the vet you can call them for advise on what to do. I've done that with my dog and didn't even have to go to the vet.

  6. Take her to a vet if you think something is really wrong. But it could probably be because she is only a few days old.

  7. I would take her to the vet if this behavior continues within 2 weeks. It could be because she was just born recently. But you don't want to go to the vet and pay for something when nothing was wrong.
