Question:

Problem connecting desktop to wireless router using USB wireless?

I've tried a few USB wireless adapters on my desktop. It makes it so far as to see wireless connections, allow me to type in my wep key, but always says there's no connectivity after that. Short of reinstalling everything, is there anything else to try, like repairing some files? I've done a repair install, but not sure what else to try since it always seems like it's just about to connect, but fails.

  1. I'm afraid the USB connectors are quite useless -- as you've already found out.  They're good if you are a few feet from the router, but at any distance they do exactly what you describe.

Get a wireless PCI Ethernet card.  These get installed inside your computer and have a 4-6" external antenna.  This will give you enough range to be able to use the wireless anywhere in your home.  If you still have problems (really big home or lots of interference from other devices like phones or microwave ovens) then you can always add an external antenna extension to the PCI card to give you extra range and power.  You can't do this with the USB adapters.  This should solve your problem.

  2. A wireless thing is like un antena their position, can define if you get good or bad signal+ plus other electric apliances interference, it sound funny but you need a magnetic compass to determine where in your house is the North pole, because all wireless toys work with the help of a satelite, like here in my city Houston,TX. all satelite antenas point south.

And always use the same brand, router+usb+ethernet card they always work better because they use the same protocols and remenber they have 360 degrees in the sky, the same in a circle.

  3. What software are you using to install the USB adapter?

Also what brand adapter are you using?

Need to know to give you a solution. USB, while not my choice, work fine if set up correctly. There are a few tricks to it

You don't allow e-mail so let's try to solve it here.

If you loaded the Linksys communications program, remove it then reboot.

Now insert the USB adapter and loaded the drivers ONLY from the CD.

    Let Windows control the communications.

Your system should now work. If not contact me through Yahoo Answers.
