a 2.0m long beam with a mass of 2.0kg is supported horizontally by two vertical strings at each end. if a load of 4.0kg is placed 0.50 m from left end, what are the tensions on the two vertical strings?

    T1 be the tension in the left hand string,

    T2 be the tension in the right hand string,

    g be the acceleration due to gravity.

    Moments about the right hand end of the beam:

    T1 * 2.0 = 4.0 * 1.50 + 2.0 * 1.0

    T1 = 4.0 kg-F = 4.0g N.

    Equating vertical forces up to those down:

    T1 + T2 = 2.0 + 4.0

    T2 = 2.0 kg-F = 2.0g N.
