  1. If you running 2000 or later (which it certainly sounds like and maybe NT or ME) try this:

    Click on Start.

    Click on Run.

Type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes and with one space between the c and the /.

    Click Okay.

This could take a few minutes or over an hour and you might be asked for your windows disk.

Hopefully that will fix the problem.  If not, go to a forum like Major Geeks or Bleeping Computer where you can talk back and forth to see if you can resolve the problem.

After running sfc, be safe and run a Windows update, especially if you have 2000 with a service pack lower than 4.  Some updates may get overwritten with sfc.

EDIT:  Good thinking Conehead.  A computer should have cmd.exe and/or command.com but not cmd.com or command.exe.

  2. Look for it in:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe

Click on it, and WAH LA!  Or just type it in the address of your file browser (My computer) and hit Go, and WAH LA!

    I like saying WAH LA!

  3. Sounds like a virus.  Run your av and see if it can find it.

At run, if you type in cmd.exe instead of cmd and it works, then you know some other cmd.* is installed on your computer.
