Question:

Problem installing Western Digital WD2500LB..?

Well, I bought a 250GB IDE Western Digital WD2500LB and I 'm trying to install it.. I 'm using an ASUS P5LD2-VM at the moment; I connected the 80pin cable, then the 4pin from the powersupplier, and then placed the jumper at 5-3/ 6-4 as http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=932&p_created=#jumper states, then also took the jumper out, in case it worked.. Using just one hard disk in case you ask..

The problem I get is when I try to install windows, it says there was no hard disk found. The powerseller from Ebay I bought it from is trustworthy, so there's no case it has a problem.. Can anyone shed some light please..? Many thanks in advance

  1. Check if the BIOS can detect your new hard drive.. As we know each IDE controller can handle two drives, one master and one slave. For example, if you put two drives configured as primary on the same bus, the computer gets confused when it tries to talk to it because they both answer. Make sure the Operating System is on the master. That could be either the jumper issue. The jumpers are located in a small jumper block on the back of the drive between the power connector and the 40-pin IDE cable connector. Check jumper block options on the back of the hard drives. If the data cable is connected to two drives then, one must be set as ‘Master’ and the other set as ‘Slave’. Have the ‘Master’ drive connected to the end connector of the data cable and the ‘Slave’ drive attached to the middle connector.

If that doesn’t work, just set your new hard drive in “cable select” setting. Don't use master or slave configuration. I mean the drive is configured at the factory for a cable select setting. This allows the drive to assume the proper role of master or slave based on the connector used on the cable.

Some ATA have three colored connectors, each connector has a specific purpose. Be sure to plug the correct connector into the correct device. (The blue connector is for your host bus adapter using a connector on your motherboard. The black connector at the other end is for your master device, usually the hard drive you boot from. And the gray connector is for an optional slave device if you have a second hard drive.)

Reboot the system and check the BIOS POST screens at startup to verify that the drive is recognized by your system’s BIOS and, if it isn’t, check in BIOS Setup to make sure that the IDE channel you have the drive connected to isn’t set to ‘disabled’. Hard disk 0 is your old hard drive and hard disk 1 is your new one. I hope this will help. Configure the BIOS first boot....CDrom first and Hard drive second..This will help....

  2. Please check your motherboard specification. be sure that your motherboard support upto 250GB. you may try to upgrade the BIOS firmware to the latest version. the most important is the BIOS can able to recognize the hard disk then only troubleshoot/install the software.

  3. The problem may be the windows cd,or if you're using a dvd player to install, that will cause that message too.If the computer recognized the new drive after you installed it,it should work fine. You need to go into the bios and see if it's recognized there.I have no idea where that is on an asus,it should say setup when you start it up,that's where you need to go.Restart it and press whatever key it says for setup. If it's listed there, the problem is the cd,if your using a cd player. It will still boot from the cd and give you the error message, even if the cd is not good.

  4. well if the computer bios does not see the drive then windows will not

try this utility to check the drive

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/SIV_System_Inf...

and check the WD site for more test utilities

BTW the ebay seller has no security on shipping, so the drive could be a failure.
