Problem putting movies that i have downloaded on to a cd?

Question

I have downloaded some movies and i cant get them onto a blank dvd my pc wont do it.

One time i got it copying onto a cd but it took about 7 hours and the movie is only a hour long but after 6 hours it stopped copying and said it had failed.

My cousin who downloads movies all the time and puts them on cds said you have to shrink the movie before you put it onto cd.

so dose anyone know any good free dvd shrink software ?
