Question:

Problem with 83 chevy caprice (catalytic converter maybe)

So my caprice has been acting up lately. It seems to idle somewhat erratically but not as bad since i replaced: the spark plugs, vacuum lines, O2 sensor, cap, coil, rotor, CTS. But otherwise idle is fine unless your driving, when you come to a red light you have to "two foot" it and and sort of "chugs" along. It has very little power now and you have to push the gas a lot further to get somewhere. Could this be a plugged catalytic converter, "which might be s******g up the EGR as a result." ALso, the exhaust smells very strong and like rotten eggs.

  1. yeah sounds like the converter

  2. well first id change the fuel filter and add a bottle of fuel treatment and then maybe have the converter replace.. really you will know it when it goes bad the car will be really leak and slow

  3. try taking the EGR off and cleaning it out, it may be sticking open which would cause the idle problem. The rotten egg smell is kinda the norm for the older cats. I'd say the cat was plugging up if you had a noticible loss of power  while driving, but idled ok.exhaust restrictions start by robbing power at higher RPM's due to the engine not being able to breathe correctly... no air out , means no air in.

  4. Very good possibility. With the car in park have some one push down on the pedal and hold your hand over the exhaust if it blows your hand away then no. If it does not really increase then it would be a definite suspect. You need to have it replaced as it is illegal to remove cats anymore.
