Problem with Laptop Optical Drive?

My girlfriends laptop has a dvd/cd-rw optical drive, several days ago it quit reading cd's. I updated the drivers for it and reinstalled it, neither did anything, I then contacted dell support, they went through a couple things and decided to replace the drive. I recieved the new optical drive, installed it and still have the same problem, it reads dvd's ok, just not cd's, any suggestions?

  1. I had a Dell Latitude that did this exact same thing a few years ago.  It turned out to be a corrupt Windows Registry key that was disabling a decoder and hosing the system.  The fix was to format the drive and re-install the OS.

A great way to test this theory would be to find someone with the same drive and swap it to see if they have the same problem.  If they don't, you probably have the same issue I had.

  2. I would say call Dell again and tell them it didn't work again and have them go through steps with you.  Maybe the new drive got damaged in transit?  You did everything I would have (the drivers) and did everything you can do when it comes to a cd/dvd drive.

  3. maybe a bad cd
