  1. On aperture priority mode, are you adjusting your aperture to something around f5.6 or f4 on a cloudy day? Try setting the camera in a program mode and see if that helps.

It sounds like you may have the aperture set to f22 or f32, and the camera can't slow the shutter speed down enough to compensate.

Check your exposure compensation settings and make sure it's not set to underexpose.

  2. The other responders are correct, but one more thing I'll ask here...What lens are you using? If it is a G series lens, I think they've got it covered, but if it is a lens that has an aperature ring, it must be set to wide open ( the lowest possible number) for the metering system to work correctly. If it is not wide open you should have got an error on the screen, but I just thought I would offer the idea... You might try removing the lens and making sure the contacts are clean and reattaching the lens too...

  3. You said your meter shows underexposure--are you sure you're not setting it to underexpose?  Try it on one of the program modes and see if it looks okay then.

Always read your manual.  There's a wealth of information in there!

You might just have a problem with your camera.  Contact Nikon for help.  http://www.nikonusa.com/Service-And-Supp...

  4. What metering mode do you have it on? Try playing around with different metering modes to see if that makes a difference.
