Problem with Sharp TV - won't turn on - any help? advice to repair or replace?

I have a Sharp 25k M100 television. It's a little old, but I don't really have the money to replace it. So, today the power went off (i guess it was a surge) for a few minutes. Then the tv won't turn back on. I tried unplugging and replugging it in, both in the surge protector strip it was in, and directly in the wall. It will turn on for about five seconds, then turn itself back off. After it dies, it will not turn back on until I unplug and replug again. Is this a problem with the wiring, the TV, the surge protector? Is there any ways to possibly fix this without replacing the tv. Are there any fuses or something inside the tv that could be checked or something? Or a reset button? I do not have the manual for this tv, I lost it a long time ago. I tried to google to find a new one and none show up for this model. Could I repair this myself, or take it to a repair shop? And if a shop, roughly is this expensive to fix or cheap easy fix?

  1. YOUR CIRCUIT BREAKER INSIDE THE POWER SUPPLY INSIDE THE TV IS TRIPPING OUT.A CLASSIC SIGN IS WHEN THE TV WILL TURN BACK ON AFTER A WHILE AND THEN SHUT OFF AGAIN.THE CIRCUIT BREAKER INSIDE THE TV IS DOING ITS JOB SORRY TO SAY THAT WHEN THIS HAPPENS 95% OF THE TIME,THE PICTURE TUBE HAS BLOWN.THE CURRENT OF ELECTRICITY SUPPLYING THE PICTURE TUBE HAS TO BE RE-DIRECTED BECAUSE IT CANNOT LOAD THE PICTURE TUBE SO TO AVOID A BURN OUT OF OTHER CIRCUITS OR POSSIBLY A FIRE,THE CURRENT OVERLOAD REVERSES AND IS REROUTED BACK THRU THE CIRCUIT TO THE POWER SUPPLY.THE EXCESS CURRENT IS TO MUCH FOR THE SYSTEM TO HANDLE SO THE CIRCUIT BREAKER OPENS THE CIRCUIT AND CUTS OUT.DIAGNOSIS?BAD PICTURE TUBE.TIME TO SHOP FOR A NEW SET.YES,TRY CRAIGS LIST.THEY ARE GREAT FOR GOOD LATE MODEL SETS FOR REALLY CRAZY LOW PRICES.YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIND A GREAT NEW NAME BRAND SET FOR ABOUT 60% LESS THAN WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD.JUST LOOK AROUND.ON THE WEB AT YOUR LOCAL ELECTRONICS OUTLETS AND EVEN THE LOCAL TV REPAIR SHOP.THEY USUALLY HAVE SUPER GOOD DEALS ON USED RE-CONDITIONED SETS.BUT I WOULD BY NEW WITH THE WARRANTY.GOOD LUCK.SORRY ABOUT THE BAD NEWS.

  2. Unless the TV Tech actually examined the TV there is no way that the advice to buy another holds good, the fault may be very minor ! so it is a little hasty telling you to get a new one, he prob can't be bothered ( or doesn't know how ) to repair your set !

BTW Tube sets are still sold in all the shops here in Australia so I can not see things being that different in USA or UK .

Anyway you now have a different view point to consider !!

    Cheers Pete

The overload current reverses back to the power supply ?

Ron I think you had better go back to your books . Don't give up your day job yet !!

  3. I don't think they even make tube TV's any longer but I totally understand about the debt thing. I'm not sure if you're willing to do so but you can check Craigslist and see if someone might be selling a TV in your price range. Good Luck.
