  1. It depends on a lot of things.  With the Airline I work for if you buy a non-refundable ticket, you can cancel it then reuse the value towards another ticket as long as you exchange it within one year of the date your purchased it. Also there would be a fee for changing it, currently my airline charges $150 dollars. Say your ticket cost $350.00  we would take  $150.00 off your ticket price for the exchange then you could use the remaining amount of $200 towards another ticket.  Change fees vary with different Airlines.

The only time I have seen where you lost the whole value of your ticket is if it was purchased through certain websites like hotwire or priceline.  Your best bet is to call whoever you booked your ticket through and ask them so that you get an accurate answer.  Not all airlines have the same rules and restrictions.

    Good luck

  2. you'll have to cancel. if you have a non-refundable ticket your going to be out the money.  If you have a refundable ticket you are going to get your money back with maybe a few dollars taken off as an administration fee.  You could always try and change the ticket too if you'd rather do that. but again, non-refundable ticket you're just going to be out the money either way
