If I go to the bank to cash a check, it bounced after I got the money, what will the banks do? And can I cash a check in a bank that I don't have a account?

  1. Most banks will only Cash a check for you if you have an account there or the person that wrote you the check has an account there, for the reason you asked before, if it bounces they have no recourse in collecting the funds. If you cash a check that bounces at a bank you have an account with they will first try to collect the funds from the bank it was drawn on, if they are not successful, they will take it from your account as repayment, also with most banks you both can face bank fees for a bounced check. Sounds like you are worried that someone doesn't have the funds to cover a check they wrote you. I would take it to their bank, ask them to check availability of funds, if they have the funds then cash it. If not you need to go see the check writer in person for a cash payment. Good luck!

  2. I believe the only way to cash a check at a bank you don't have an account with is if you are cashing one of their checks.  Look on the check and see what bank it is from and they should cash it.  It can tell them immediately if the other person has the money to cover the check, if not, they will give the check back and tell you there is insufficient funds.

If you cash a check and it bounces, yes they will come after you for the money back and charge you a fee too.
