Question:

Problem with computer after windows update?

My computer just did a windows update(automatic) and now my computer is getting the blue screen of death! I can't even get into my computer using safe mode(any of them) or go back to "when computer last worked correctly". I tried the set up mode but don't really understand what I can do thru there as it just looks like info on the computer and its components.

It is a Dell XPS running windows XP home. It is approximately 4 years old.

With the update it asked me to allow or deny registry changes and I have had no problem in the past allowing them but it looks like I should not have allowed 1 or more of the changes since I now can't even get into my computer and no matter what I choose in the F8, F2, or F12 mode it goes right back to the blue screen of death as it tries to reboot!

  1. Could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software. This  problem can be solved by uninstalling new software, updating device drivers and making minor configuration changes . From http://fixit.in/bluescreenofdeath.html . You can also run a free registry scan using utilities from http://re7.info

  2. Are you sure the updates were from microsoft. I am asking that, because in the years that I have windows xp I have never ever been asked to allow or deny registry changes. What updates will ask, will you yes or no install internet explorer 7

I have the feeling, that you are in trouble.

Updates from microsoft will not give you the blue screen.

I have had it once, that I could not get to save mode or anything else.

I could just like you nothing what so ever. I got the blue screen because of a virus and not because of xp up dates.

At the end I had to format my pc and reinstall windows.

I do not mind really. Everything important I want to keep is permanently stored on my d drive. I have done it more than 100 times so I am quite experienced in it.

Hope you do not have to format.

Switch your pc off for a while. Unplug it, not just switch off
