Question:

Problem with connecting laptop to TV?

I am trying to connect my Dell laptop with my Phillips Magnavox Smart series TV with a S-video/RCA cable and I only can see the desktop wallpaper on the TV.

I have selected the alternative monitor (that number 2 box from the display>settings) and "extend my windows desktop onto this monitor".

I have also changed the screen resolution. But all I can see on the TV is just my desktop wallpaper.

The entire desktop with all windows icon etc. came on the TV screen once but after that I cannot do anything with that. I can even see the mouse pointer on the TV screen but no other icon.

Can anyone please help me?

  1. You need a VGA cable. Only modern TVs have the right connection.

  2. Hi Dear,

I suspect this a resolution issue or extending the desktop also could be an issue,

if you move your mouse around may be take it below, you may be able t o see taskbar or start button ? do you ?

    Good luck

  3. Thats because your tv is acting as a second monitor, when connected like that move your mouse way left, i bet you see your mouse once it leaves your laptop screen.  Go back onto settings for your monitor and change your tv to your primary monitor.  Should be as simple as clicking on the number 2 monitor icon, but sometimes it takes a little tweeking.

  4. You need to be able to connect it with a VGA cable.

  5. Instead of selecting extend my windows desktop, choose clone.
