Hello

I am having big problems gloss painting an outside wood door and some window sills outside of my house . The finish resembles a network of fine capilliaries or a crazy swirling paving pattern . This is the 3 rd time Ive encountered this and I have tried painting thin coats , thicker coats , have tried a specialist outside red paint ( which was terrible ) . I have also invested in expensive bristle brushes to try and remedy the problem --even an epensive one coat white gloss is showing the same problems --I would have said it was just that I am a **** painter but Ive redocated many houses in the past inside and out and have never encountered this problem on such a large scale --im now faced with scraping down my third attempt and re sanding again for another try ---can anyone please help me in where Im going wrong --I am near the sea in an area with constantly changing weather --could this be the problems? THANKS

  1. clean off all old paint right down to the bare wood, then prime ,undercoat and then gloss

  2. It is not your painting skills and certainlay nothing to do with being near the sea (i can see the sea from my house and never have any problem painting). Ponk43 may be right in that the glazing sealant may be silicone based and some has migrated, or the timber work may have had some sort of oil based  preservative applied in the past.

It is always good to know when to stop and take a second look at the problem. I rather think that there are no short cuts for you and that you may have to sand down all your woodwork to remove the top surface.

Most big paint companoies have quite good technical service departments - why not explain your problem to a couple of them and see what explanations/remedies they have to offer.  They probably see or hear about more painting problems in a week than you or I will encounter in a lifetime.

  3. Its down to salt....Get some sugar soap and give the woodwork a thorough clean up. Let it dry then use an undercoat primer. Let that dry and then gloss with an outside all weather paint.  Good luck.!

  4. this is happening because you are painting over silicone, which cannot be painted. you need to either strip out the old caulk, recaulk with a paintable silicone, or acrylic caulking. or you could clean up the edges with a razor scraper and cut the paint into it...

    ...good luck.
