Question:

Problem with installing Ubuntu ?

I keep on getting this error message: ""buffer I/O error on device fdo block 0", whenever I try to install ubuntu or kubuntu. I built a custom pc and thought that I would use a free OS until my vista comes. Am I not configuring something in the Bios or the options right? Is it the way that I have set up the hardware? If someone knows whats going on please let me know.

  1. fd0 is your floppy drive! My best guess is that you have the floppy drive enabled in BIOS, but don't actually have one installed in your machine. Disable it in BIOS and all should be well.

If you do have a floppy drive installed, it's probably faulty, or wrongly connected (cable reversed, or disconnected).

If you have any other install problems, try downloading the "alternate" CD (rather than the Live CD) and install from that. This uses a text-based installer which is less likely to have problems with hardware compatibility. You don't necessarily have to install to a clean hard drive - it's possible to configure, delete, and resize partitions during the installation process.

  2. You might have better luck at ubuntuforums.org

Here is already a thread on that topic.

There are a bunch of links on Google for this problem.
