Question:

Problem with my landlord's cat?

Hallo. My landlord's cat has recently developed some exciting new lavatory habits. It ducks under the steps and defecates right under my front door. It's just out of my reach, so I can't get in there with rubber gloves to clean it up.

There's a very strong smell of catshit around the door, which assaults the nostrils of anyone coming up the path.

How do I get the little b*****d to stop?

  1. Put some large pieces of cardboard under the steps.  When the cat craps there, remove the cardboard and dump the c**p in front of your landlord's door.

  2. Our cats used to do the same kind of thing, just not quite to that extent! I would try some of this!

    good luck!

  3. It's the landlord's problem. Request a bag of lime be given to you or that the landlord do cleanup with a shovel to reach the area.

  4. The most obvious solution is to prevent the cat from being able to get under the steps.

If you raise the matter politely with your landlord, they may be willing to help by providing materials required to block access to the area in question.

There are some cat repellants on the market - although I don't know how effective they are.

There is also a product on the market that you could place under the steps. When it senses the cat, it lets out a noise and a blast of compressed air. This is normally used to stop cats walking through a doorway/corridor - but it should be equally effective here.

The best way to use it is to have it there sometimes, but not always - put it there for a few days, take it away for a day or two, etc - this way it is totally unpredictable to the cat, and after a while you should be able to remove it forever.

EDIT : here is an example of the device I described (http://www.tesco-shopping.com/StayAway.h... Maybe the landlord would be prepared to contribute to buying one?

  5. Block off the area where the cat crawls under the steps. Use some Lattice to block it off.

  6. Put a dog under there.

  7. LOL...I would suggest finding out what the cat doesn't like and put it under the steps. Like what kind of plant, grass or filler it doesn' tlike and use that.

  8. try sprinkling some cayenne pepper on the ground, this gets on their paws and as most cats wash up after the toilet, goes from the paws to the mouth... I've also heard the black centres of marigold flowers, if you have any growing nearby, are good to sprinkle around as they are also very pungent....
