  1. Well, between the snapping turtles and the herons there's little opportunity for the goldfish in my pond to die of natural causes. But here are some thoughts for you: 1) what size is your pond? If it is small, shallow and in a sunny area the water could be rising to dangerous temps for your fish...the easy solution would be to add some floating plants for shade. 2) Is there a filter? A filter will remove contaminants and fish waste as well as circulate the water...which will help oxygenate the pond. 3) This goes along w/number 1: how many fish are you putting in? Is it possible you are overstocking it?

  2. filling a pond with fresh water will upset the balance of the pond for several months. you should have a pump on the pond to create oxygen ( the bigger fish tend to die first if its an oxygen prob) when placing the fish in the pond float the fish on top in bags (not in direct sunlight) for an hour and place small amounts of pond water in the bags every 15 mins or so, this will acclimatize the fish slowly other wise they may go into shock and die. make sure no chemicals are getting into the pond from rain run off or spraying garden plants ect. and give the fish shade if the pond is in direct sunlight. the pond (depending on what fish you have) shouldnt be less than 3 ft deep the reason is fish cant take rapid changes in temp, if its too shallow the temp will change alot throughout the day. when you buy fish make sure they are very healthy, they will cope with the new environment much easier than a sick or poor condition fish. also feed with food containing high vitamin c, this acts as a stress alleviater and at time of stress they use up their reserves of this nutrient very quickly. you dont mention what fish or what filters and size the pond is, so its hard to be more specific.
