Question:

Problem with outboard tilt?

by  |  earlier

I try to tilt this motor up, and all it does is smoke. For example, I press the tilt up button, I can hear the noise, but it just smokes (Even when motor isnt running) when I try to lift it.

This puts me in an awkward position for towing... Lol. I need to replace the motor and All I can think of is removing the lower part just to move it without it dragging. More importantly, I need to know (I Know very little about this motor - a 10-15yr old evinrude 70hp i believe), But would like to know what I can do to get it tilting. I do not want to turn the motor on, nor stress what was smoke, into becoming a fire.

What might it be, any suggestion on a possible course of action?

Cheers

  1. Something is caught. The tilt motor is engaging but the outboard itself is not moving....correct?

The smoke is likely electrical form the tilt motor stressing or overheating. Get looking around the mechanism to see what is binding up your outboard...is it in a "down lock position"? or take it for service.

Could be a low amperage condition as well...check batts. It needs amperage.....

  2. Sorry Mark, you are thinking of smaller engines, ones without hydraulic trim and tilt. On that model you would need to loosen the manual release s***w located on the side of the trim unit. This will bypass the hydraulics and allow you to lift it manually.

This won't help if the tilt tube is frozen!

  3. Hay, I recommend you get yourself a shop Manuel that covers your make and model Johnson/Evinrude 70 hp look it up in troubleshooting and follow procedures to repair;)

  4. Could it be the Revers lock down wont unlock?

you may want to check this out

  5. Check or add fluid to the hydraulic pump. You will probably have to replace it but that is not hard.

  6. Put the motor in forward and you should be able to tilt it up manually, then block it up for towing. The trim pump itself may be bad or the engine could be seized up on the tilt pivots.

  7. the motor you are refering to has a manual release valve located on the mounting bracket near the waterline. you can loosen(do not remove s***w) the valve to manually lift the motor by hand. the smoking is due to a wireing short and must be addressed before you do anything about repair. the trim/tilt motor doesnt get HOT and stressed as it has an internal thermal cut-out switch built into the brush cap of the motor. you probably have a short in the wireing. ask back with model # of engine and I can supply a wire diagram
