Question:

Problem with society? - Babies having babies?

Today, on the AOL webpage, I found a news article dicussing the fact that a group of teenagers under the age of 16 at a high school in Gloucester, Massachusetts, had made a pact to all get pregnant at the same time. Those that did not end up pregnant, were very disappointed. Apparently the reason why they chose to do this was because having a child brings status and a sense of purpose. (If you want to read the article, here's a link - http://news.aol.com/story/_a/teens-pregnancy-pact-shocks-town/20080619211609990001 ). I was just wondering what everyone thought of this. Is it a problem with society, with the teenagers themselves, or is there something else working in this?

  1. I think the state should automatically take kids of teenage parents away. Seriously, what can they provide for their child?

  2. Is Jamie Lynn Spears baby pregnant yet ???

  3. Where are the parents?  Have they not discussed morals and how these girls planned to support the children?  All it should take is for the parents to say, "I would be very disappointed in you and your judgment if you ever got pregnant"    You would be on your own.  I have raised my kids, and I don't want to raise anymore.  Do these girls think the babies are dolls and not real people?!  very sad state of affairs.

  4. We lived in RI not too far from Gloucester.  It is not a very good area.  There is not much of an economy in the area and they probably don't think they have much of a future.  Besides its run by the Kennedy's.  They have a fantastic welfare system in Massachusetts.  There is absolutely no incentive to get a job.

I think the thing that strikes me, these kids can get pregnant and there is no problem.  I group of people in Texas has their children taken away from them because the state believes they are making children have children.  I find this to be completely ironic.

  5. the main problem is bad parents not raising their children right. Guess what idiot parents these kids will be?

  6. I blame Jamie Lynn Spears!!! She made unwed motherhood "CHIC"!!!

  7. Kids are delicate creatures who DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING most of the time, by which I mean they have had way too little experience to understand consequences. That is why adults are supposed to GUIDE them. Little by little we adults have been abandoning kids to their own resources - TV (and all the worship of meritless fame to be aped there), time-killing video games (and all the violence that doesn't seem to hurt anybody there), the internet (and all the junk to be found among the good stuff there), Messenger (and all the time-wasting to be done there), and the ever-present freezer-to-microwave 'nutrition' available at all hours. Kids need someone to watch over them, to know where they are at night, to set rules, to pay attention. So who's fault is it that this isn't happening so much anymore? Well, our society demands that both parents work to make ends meet, parents act like kids too often themselves and only consider themselves, the media glorifies the worst in human nature and 'values' glamour and cleverly-told lies, schools are more interested in controlling kids than educating them, and kids themselves are addicted to immediate gratification (which is a result of their non-upbringing).

Having said that, I feel so sorry for the kids, for their parents, for the babies-to-be, for the whole sad story. And I definitely disagree with the comments by the director of Juno, who claimed that films like hers (of which they were a few some months ago)  have nothing to do with influencing those poor girls.

  8. I feel this is horrible and the girls need some direction in life. Those who didn't get pregnant are lucky and for those who did I hope them well. This is a problem and I really wish I could do something about it.
