Question:

Problems connecting to the internet (cox)?

My account was suspended, but I then got it unsuspended. Cox said it would take 5-10 minutes for me to be back online. However that didn't happen and I was passed around to different parts of Cox via phone. Troubleshooting tried to help and all of this stuff but I still haven't been able to go on. I only get to a screen that says page cannot be displayed. The tab says cannot find server. My account is fine, and my cable box is directly connected to my computer but everything works perfectly. Cox thinks that my firewall is in the way and I took it down but it still doesn't work. Even the Cox people had to give up. It seems my computer has some wall protecting it so they can't even see my computer from their end. I have an HP Windows XP. Can anyone give me some advice to how I can connect to the internet again?

  1. sorry if my answer's long, lol... but i've some troubleshooting tips here, so please bear with me... lol

it could be one of these things: faulty device (ruled out, since you can use your phone just fine, right?); bad storms (any?lately); recent repair on the lines around the area (any?); old modem; fax machines; satellite discs, phone filters, extension phones... (lol there are many things that can s***w up your DSL connection :)

can you try pulling up a webpage using My Computer? (yes, you can pull up a webpage from there. just type in the web url on the address bar.) if you were able to go to a website (yahoo or google.com would be fine), then i think it's your browser which has the problem. uninstall what you have, and download and install a new one. (what browser do you use, btw? internet explorer? i recommend Mozilla Firefox version 3) :-)

what troubleshooting steps did you use?

if your browser is fine, sometimes clearing the cache / cookies would do the trick.

    for INTERNET EXPLORER:

    >pull up IE >click Internet Options > General > Delete Files > Delete Cookies > Settings > Automatically > Disk Space to Use : 20MB > OK > OK > close the browser window and try surfing again

    for FIREFOX:

    >pull up Firefox > Tools > Options > Privacy > Show Cookies > remove all cookies > close > privacy > 50MB > OK > close the browser window and try surfing again

if still no go, please check the lights on your modem if all the necessary lights are solid, namely, the power light, ethernet light (usual connection type. some use USB), DSL light, and the Internet light (some modems have it).

they should all be solid. if the DSL light / internet light is not on, you're not getting any signal from the provider. if it's blinking, it could mean it's trying to detect signal (technical term is syncing).

now there's a troubleshooting thingy i'd give you called Power Cycling *technical term, sort of refreshing your connection* ...now, if you feel you're not sure about this, try to get the Cox agent/s on the phone and ask about it.

    Power Cycle:

    1. Turn off everything: PC, AVR (if you have one), turn off MODEM -the one with the blinky blinky flashy flashy lights ^_^ -.

(oh, and leave your phone -where your DSL subscription is connected- alone, don't disconnect anything).

    2. CAREFULLY disconnect the cables from your modem, then wait for at least 30seconds before hooking them back.

    3. Once you've hooked the cables back, turn the modem on and wait for the lights to become solid. especially the power and the dsl lights. if the DSL light is blinking, it means it's trying to get sync.

(note: if your modem is kinda OLD (i hope not lol), your lights must be busted/broken.)

    4. Meantime, while waiting (could take a minute or so) turn on your PC.

    5. Check for solid lights. Try to surf the internet. ^_^

there's another set of troubleshooting steps i know, but this would do for now. you can just drop me a line (e-mail). but i do hope this works.

and again, if you're not sure about something, call your internet provider.
