Hi, i'm Trying to fit an IKEA bathroom light and my house has the old wiring colours of red & black where as the ikea light use the new system of brown, blue and green/yellow for earth.. here's my problem.. The wires coming out of the ceiling are 2 red and 2 black.. 2 red wires connect into one terminal in the back of the existing light socket and the 2 black wires connect into seperate terminals..

So as i've know red is live and the 2 red wires connect to the live terminal of the ikea light but what about the 2 black wires? at the moment they connect into different terminals how do i know which to connect where.. thanks for any help you can offer..

  1. Get a licensed electrician. The price it costs to hire one is far less then personal injury or a fire caused by incorrect wiring and bad connections!

  2. you do not need an electrician at all. We have some amazing folks here who are very qualified to answer your question. Sooo just hang in there and someone will guide you on the right path

  3. Bathrooms are classed as "special locations" and as such you should be very careful because of the increased risk you must check that the fitting is suitable for bathrooms first then the two black wires will be neutral and switchwire so one to blue and the other to brown the two reds are a looped live these need to be in a connector block together don't forget to swith of the fuse to the lights first.

  4. The two red wires are live in and live to the switch

The two black wires are switched live from the switch and neutral

So connect blue to one black and brown to the other black

Disconnect power first at the fuse box
