Problems in cashing in travelers checks-Thomas Cook debit card like to bring money abroad?

Question

I went to my bank, Bank of Montreal and the banker told me that some customers had problems with cashing in travelers checks (BMO offers American express checks). I am taking a trip to SICILY and I was wondering if I should get traveler's checks or bring half TC and half cash.
