Question:

Problems shifting my Front Derailleur?

When I shift from the second gear (middle ring) to the third gear (larger ring) on my Front Derailleur the chain doesn't catch right away and it makes an awful sound. What do you think is causing this problem and what steps should i take to correct it?

  1. One other thing to check...

Shift the bike to the middle ring and pull the derailleur towards the big ring by hand. There should be no LESS than 1/32" (1mm) between the derailleur and ring, and no MORE than 1/16" (2mm). Either of these conditions would cause your problem... but the other answers are valid as well.

  2. Two things-

When you shift hold the shifter in that position until you feel it shift.

    Or

On the the top of your derailleur there are 2 screws they should be marked H and L.

Turn the H s***w by 1/4 turn increments counter clockwise. Simply put 1/4 turn and the try and shift the bike.

Here is a link with complete instructions on front derailleur set up.

  3. I agree with checking the two areas stated by the previous answerer.

I would also add one more:  If your front derailleur has indexed shifting, it's possible the tension on the shift cable could use a little tightening.  Locate the barrel adjuster and make small adjustments.

  4. I agree with the above statements.  Sounds like the cable stretched some.  Find the barrel adjuster and turn it 1/2 of a turn counter clockwise and try it, if its works ok if not try another 1/2 turn.

The barrel adj will be up around the brake handle on some bikes

and on the front down tube on some road bikes.
