Question:

Problems with a Philips Television.?

I bought a Philips 50" television a few months back. The model is 50P8341. When I first got it, everything worked fine, except the power button and source button on the television. (They were strange, sometimes they worked, sometimes they did the other's job. Source turned off TV, vice versa. I'm not sure if this could be related.)

A few days ago, I was watching TV and the power button started to blink. I turned off the TV, then a few seconds later, it turned itself back on. This happened a few more times, so I just unplugged the TV and let it set.

Yesterday, I plugged the TV in and it worked perfectly fine. Today, I turned it on and it worked fine for about an hour. Now the TV changes source, (I may be watching a movie on AV 3, then it will randomly switch to Tuner Channel 1.)

I tried to shut off the TV, and it turned itself back on.

If anyone knows any reason why any (or all) of this is happening, and knows a way to fix it, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

Jason.

  1. The only thing I could think of maybe the remote button is sticking on the source button.   After you turn your TV on put the remote in a drawer or take it to another room.  If it  never does that anymore you know that the remote button on the source is intermitten.  Another problem could be the freqency on that remote is off due to weak batteries. If is a UHF remote you could be picking  up other signals through the air.   I assume that is an infrared remote.  I don't give  sources out because I'm the source.   I have been a TV repairman for over 40 years.  A lot of this is just common electronic sense to me.  Just for the record change your batteries rather there bad or not.   Most of these TVs run off AAA batteries.  anywhere from two to four.  If the remote is bad it should be in warranty.  I had customers to spill coke, milk, coffee products on the remote and that would make them stick big time.

  2. Well I've seen when people clean the screen the cleaner gets down into the buttons and into the switches. Or if you have an ultra-sonic humidifier calcium dust can get in there.

The buttons in these new sets actuate a resistance, the micro processor looks for a different resistance for each function. So I've seen where the contaminants humidity and temperature effect the resistance that the microprocessor sees. It's these factors I think, that are faking out the micro processor and changing your source.

  3. If you are quite shure that the problem is not because of your remote ( or from other remotes as told by other persons who are answering this question), call the TV's service centre and check your TV.

  4. As crazy as this may sound, have you had any type of paranormsl activity other thatn that in your house? You may have a ghost. I have never heard of a tv turning itself back on before ...very creepy!!

  5. The other night, I was watching TV and it suddenly started changing channels on it's own.  It turned out the batteries in the remote control were low and the remote was sending out random comands.

Try replacing the batteries in the remote control.

    I hope this helps.

  6. RT and RAYMOND actually have GOOD ANSWERS.....

Because they probably put your model into Google and got all sorts of info.....

    But it's a Philips.....

And I have seen your problem before.....

And it's the most common failure on a Philips TV set....

And neither guy is talking about Philips problems....the Windex Syndrome does not occur on this TV because the buttons are even below the plastic screen....they are isolated from Windex Syndrome.....

The remote and button problems are found ON RCA TV sets, not the Philips TV sets......never had a bad Philips button....

So.....wanna know what fails?  Unplugging it is the REAL CLUE to your problem....

Now everybody will say it's.....(fill in the blank RT/Raymond -- if you actually are TV Techs you KNOW )

But we call it the SSB board.....and you can only get them from Philips Authorized Servicers like us....and they have to have the correct number on the board

  7. Are you using a remote for a cable box such as a comcast or adelphia cable provider?

Is their another cable box in another room that another family member is watching at the time this is happening?

Do you live in an apartment or duplex, or is your home really close to the neighbor who may also have the same provider?

This is very rare but it sounds like you may have interference from another remote in the area. Many of these remotes can work through walls and buildings and more! It cant hurt to look into.

If this is not the case, you probably have to find a more effective code for the remote. There are usually many codes for each device that you are programing the remote to work with. Sometimes if you have a code that works, but acts up, you really do not have the correct code.

Get out the guide book for the remote and check other codes.

Simply reprogramming it could fix the problem as well. even if you use the same code.

If you dont have the guide book, maybe the info will be on the manufacturers website (manufacturer of the remote)

    Good luck!

  8. I agree with RT and Raymond.
