Problems with convictions and visa's?

my dad has previous convictions off the 70's and is hoping to get a visa for a our trip to florida nxt year, his convictions are for assault and theft. what do you think his chances are. He has already got an appointment with the us embassy i'm just wondering if any readers out there had any probs with visa's
