Question:

Problems with my network

I just recently performed a destructive recovery of my laptop computer, then I reset my router, which was kinda stupid, I admit. Now, for some reason, my computer won't display my shared folder in the Network Neighborhood. I did do the home and office network setup, and I used the Linksys

Easylink Adviser to set up the router itself. I ran the Netowrk Set-up Wizard about 4 times, reinstalled my wireless adapter drivers, and still nothing. Then, I went through the file and printer troubleshooter and found out my computer won't ping. My desktop pings and so does my router, but not my laptop. Any ideas on what is going on and how do I fix it?

  1. first up, make sure you dont have a firewall blocking it (laptops firewall) then try a ping to your router through command prompt (ping 192.168.x.x*x) if that doesnt work and you dont have a firewall blocking it, try connecting through a cable from the laptop to the router (no wireless), then try the ping again, if it works then its something to do with the wireless. check your router's settings and make sure it isn't blocking certain wireless clients etc. if your getting a ping but no shared docs then just make a new folder on your laptop and share it (right click > properties > sharing tab > then allow sharing), that will take you through a few steps then maybe restart and check again.

    hope some of that helped

  2. Make sure you've turn Sharing on.  Also, you could check if your firewall is blocking traffic (just turn it off and try pinging)

  3. Try to disable your firewall for a very brief test.  If connection is possible with that arrangement, then a port is not opening properly.

I had to drop a Zone Alarm setup & just went with the Windows (SP2) one.
