Problems with saving PS2 game progress when I turn the PS2 off...?

Hi there, I'm having problems witht the PS2 game "Black", where I can't save progress beyond the Treneska border crossing. I've got an 8mb memory card, which has only been used for a few games, and if I get past the checkpoints the game will restart from there if I lose, (so it does save this), but if I then turn the PS2 off, or quit the game, I lose all this progress. Basically, the progress is is deleted when I turn the PS2 off. Any ideas how to solve this?
