I have a friend who is an insulin dependent diabetic and just got very ill over the last few weeks. She was put in the hospital and they said it looks like her pancreas. What can they do to help here, if you know. Can they do a transplant?

  1. she could have an episode of pancreatitis. that happens alot, especially if she is a diabetic. i doubt they would do a transplant most likely they would put her on insulin just like they do with people who are diabetic and their pancreas totally stop working and producing insulin altogether. this is not all that unusual a problem and the doctors do know what they are doing so please do not worry and do not worry her. she has enough problems right to have anything else to worry about. the solution are all very simple. many blessings to you and to your friend.

  2. They can do a transplant.  More than likely they will try and transplant the islet cells first.

  3. A pancreatic transplant should probably be ruled out since there are very few available donors available and they're only using this extreme measure with diabetic patients who also need kidney transplants.

What your friend may have is pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas which can be acute or chronic, I don't know a lot about it other than in acute pancreatitis the condition usually clears up by itself, unlike the chronic form which keeps coming back.

Your friend needs to have an in depth conversation with her doctor(s) to have this better evaluated.

  4. There is not a cure for diabetics.

  5. If they can find a compatible donor, yes, they can transplant the pancreas.  If they do, they will do this instead of just the islets.  If they did this, your friend would no long have diabetes.  However, if she just has a case of pancreaitis or something, most likely they will treat her with medications.

Isn't it amazing that some people don't read the question and  say stuff like  they could put her on insulin.  Hello...she is already insulin dependent.
