Question:

Procedures to become U.S. citizen?

I am currently 21 y/o with a green card. My mom married a citizen when I was 17, she had recently taken the test and became a citizen. What would I have to go through to become a citizen as well? I've only been a green card holder for 4 years(since my parents got married), but I have lived here for more than 6 years before that, under student visa. Since now that I am 21 (no longer a minor), will the process be more complicated? Brief explanation of how these things work would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  1. Your mother was able to apply for citizenship after holding a green card for 3 years due to her marriage to an American citizen. You have to wait until you have held a green card for 5 years before you can apply for yourself.

The process for you will be exactly the same as for your mother. You will have to apply for naturalization, pay the fees, get fingerprinted again, take the citizenship test and then you will eventually be told where to go for the oath ceremony.

It's not so far away. You should talk to your mother and ask her about the what she did.
