  1. Hi Christine - Visit the DMV website (www.dmv.ca.gov) where you'll find a ton of information.
Specifically, you need to enroll in a Driver Ed. online course - ask friends for their recommendations.  This course replaces the 30 hour course previously completed in schools; so plan on the course taking at least a weekend or two.
You'll receive a Cert. of Completion (DMV form) from the online course when you've taken their "final" exam.
Second, you'll need to enroll in a Driver Training (Behind-the-Wheel) school.
You MUST PRE-ENROLL prior to going to the DMV to take your permit exam.
The school will send you a Cert. of Enrollment which, along with the above Cert. must be presented at the DMV.
Upon passing the permit test, (congratulations) you'll receive your permit, valid for ONE year.  HOWEVER...it is not VALID until you complete the first lesson with the driving school you pre-enrolled with.  So, be sure you have done your homework and selected a school and driving instructor you'll like.
I even offer a short phone interview with parents prior to enrolling a student.  Good luck and drive safely!
