Prodigal son Shane Geraghty returns to London Irish – Rugby News Update
Shane Geraghty, the 25-year-old fly-half, currently playing for Brive in France, has confirmed that he has signed a two-year contract with London Irish, and will start the 2012-2013 season with them.
The versatile back started his career with the Irish before leaving for the Northampton Saints in 2009. A product of their academy, he first played for the London club in 2005 and by the time he left, Geraghty had played 42 times for the club, with only
11 appearances coming as a substitute, and scoring 127 points. With him in the team, London Irish had a winning percentage of 65.47.
Speaking regarding his return, the Exiles director of rugby, Brian Smith, said, "I don't think there is any baggage," alluding to his bitter departure for the Saints, further adding, "A week is a long time in sport, we all move on and grow and mature. I'm
sure Brive will be very upset we have pinched him.”
The most succinct analysis on his return came from Graham McKechnie of the BBC, who said, “Shane Geraghty coming back underlines that Brian Smith is now absolutely in charge. Such a move would have been unthinkable had Toby Booth been responsible for recruitment.”
McKechnie also touched upon the sour relationship between the fans and Shane, adding that he will have to work hard to mend relations but his return should excite fans, as they will see the return of a fly-half with undoubted ability.
Smith was also full of praise for Shane, calling him exceptional and added that he believes that his inclusion will give his team a new dimension. Brian said, "He's a game breaking ball player and he's matured as a game controller. As we're a team that wants
to attack, Shane is a great player to partner Tomás O'Leary.”
The new season will see a different London Irish team, both in the playing staff, as well as the managerial department. The team bids farewell to three players; Delon Armitage, Nick Kennedy and Bob Casey.
Shane Geraghty had an outstanding first spell for the London based club and everyone will be hoping for a similar impact in his second stint.
