Well kid by a prod cue I mean a company that makes cues to be sold to the public with no one in mind they are makeing them for-As in the case of a Custom cue-

Can you spec a cue 1 1/2 inch longer from them then that (1) would not be a "run of the mill" cue

Off the shelf is Production

  1. I still don't think Schon should be considered production in the sense that, say, Meucci is production, but Evan personally tests each cue that leaves that place...He also says they sometimes go a couple weeks without turning out a single cue. But I don't know what he tests them for.

Sorry, I know what it means, I just meant Schon is a little different, I think :) I don't think there's one man at Meucci, for example, who designs and tests each cue personally.

  2. I will put on the table up front I have no first hand information of this subject. This being said I would like to make an educated guess from the stand point if I were entertaining going into the business.

    1. The clue would have to have piazzas a real s*x appeal in its appearance. You could have laser sights on a ugly stick and it wouldn’t sell on the level of “production cues”.

    2. Limiting deflection would be a primary focus

    3. Balance would be also primary focus

    4. And last but not least the joints ability to deliver energy from the handle to shaft efficiently.            These 4 items would in my eyes be the most important focal points in a high quality production cue. I welcome judgment from those of you far above my level as to how well I did recognizing the critical areas.

  3. Quality control can vary greatly among manufacturers, but many aspects are similar.

Wood selection is not even in the same universe as custom cues. Production cue manufacturers will use almost anything they're sent, while a custom cue manufacturer will usually spend hours upon hours at lumberyards (or whatever their particular source is) sifting through every piece of wood they have until they find a few that are perfect. A production manufacturer will only disqualify a piece of wood based on major blemishes.

Production manufacturers will only do empirical and visual quality control. By that I mean, they will only measure the cue's dimensions and give it a visual inspection to disqualify a cue, and even then, they will miss blemishes much more often than a custom cue manufacturer. I have never heard of ANY production cue company that test hits every cue off the line, while a custom manufacturer will scrap any cue that does not feel right.

I do not consider Schon in the same category as most production cues. They are very low output and build their cues like customs. The only reason they're usually considered production is because they make runs of cues that are exactly the same rather than make almost every cue unique.

Anyway, with all the custom cuemakers out there, I would recommend to anyone with $400-500 to spend on a cue to not even consider production cues. A custom cue will always play better and be of higher quality than a production cue of the exact same price. Even if you wanted a Predator shaft or something, if you have a custom build with a Predator shaft it will likely play better than a Predator cue and not cost much more.

  4. I don't blame you for wanting to ask instead of answerng....

    Will .... later.

    EDIT

I would think that they would!, but sometimes even quality control inspectors probably let something get by them.

intentionally or unintentionally!, especially if they had a bad night like I did last night!. You really can't do quality work with a hangover.

What if it's a guy that has had his money hustled by some pool player, and he wants to get even, or what if he is a yahoo pool player, that we gave an answer to?
