Productive cough with mucus?

Hello, since the end of May 2008, I have had this cough with mucus which is a white color when I spit it out, but I don't understand why it's still there. I went to the doctor and they checked my lungs with the stethascope and they said my lungs were clear. Can anyone give me any ideas on what this is? I am also taking Nexium for my acid reflux which is working fine. I just can't seem to get rid of this cough and spitting up this white mucus.

thanks for your answers

  1. If they checked your lungs and that was OK, then it could be an inflammation of your airways or sinus problems.  If you have an inflammation of your airways, mucus could be a result.  If you had allergies or a cold this can cause inflammation of your sinuses.  This too will cause mucus production.  As long as the mucus is white/clear then you are ok, because that means there is no infection present.  When it turns green or yellow, then there is an infection present.  What other symptoms are you having?
