What are SPECIFIC companies and products that use child labor? I've been told countries that child labor takes place in, but I'm more interested in specific companies and products that I might buy that are fruit of child labor.

  1. Newspapers are exempt from child labor laws.

When the campaigned against working children too hard, they also campaigned to let the deliver newspapers.

  2. Well let's see.

In many Asian countries there are no child labor laws so any company making their products in those countries more than likely are employing children.

Nearly every major corporation has their products produced in Asia.  From Nike to Mattel to GM & Ford.

  3. Child labor and exploitation are certainty against our American ethics, but I have been to developing countries where people live in poverty and have little hope of gaining an education or a meaningful job.  Often the choice is the job or starvation existence begging or scavenging.  Every affluent economy today has a history of exploitive labor that allowed wealth to be accumulated and the economy grown.   Just remember your well intended bleeding heart may well be the act that lets the unemployed child starve to death.

I know you think I am some big uncaring fat cat, but I am actively involved in providing education to poor children in East Africa who have been abandoned by their parents.  Even with high school and even university education there is no guarantee they will find meaningful employment because of the poor economy and lack of opportunity.  I have seen university educated men shining shoes for tips because there was not other jobs available.

  4. Newspapers hire kids as young as 12 but we were able to get work at 11 because mom signed up for the route. Many janitorial companies have children who work with their parents but the parents collect the money.

It is harder to find jobs now when you are a child, I started at 7 picking green beans and my little brother started at 6. Now they have laws to prevent children from working. Most are self employed doing things like mowing lawns or babysitting.
