  1. Hakke Sho and Hikka Ken, are Japanese for Baguazhang and Piguaquan (Chinese martial arts), respectively, just so you. And yes you can learn even if you are a little overweight.

You can but you need to find instructors nearby that you can learn from. Wushu and Bagau ought to be easier to find but Pigua will be more difficult. Check the yellow pages or yell.com.

Please don't choose a martial art just because it looks cool. If you're just doing it because you want to look cool, well then that's okay, but make sure the school is a good one.

As for the stance. I consider it important to have a good stance but, again, it doesn't have to be cool. I prefer a simple boxers upright stance. You get comfortable through practise.

  2. I'm 140 pounds but I'm 5'9.5'' and I'm the best of the people around my age (14) in my class in Tae Kwon Do. so you could do fine. Are you actually chubby? Or do you just weigh a lot? If your chubby you should practice in your yard more than you normally would. And with kicks and stuff work on your technique first. So yes, you could easily do fine.

  3. being overweight should not hinder you from doing martial art.   I practice capoeira which is a real heavy physical art but still I know a few overweight individuals that participate.  If anything it would help you tone your body and get rid of those excess pounds.

  4. Hold on, to many questions.

Yes you can be a little overweight and do martial arts. That is how I got involved in the first place. My doctor recommended it ---sort of. I was 5'5", 305 lbs. The first year I lost nearly 100lbs. and felt great. I have a friend who was heavier than you and started Wushu and looks great now.

when you begin classes in a particular style you will learn about stances. that will be part of the beginning learning.

    Go girl get in there!!

  5. 1st part - yes, you can be overweight and learn martial arts.  Martial arts will help you exercise and burn up calories, but for serious weight loss, you would also need to change your diet.

I have never heard of Hikka Ken or Hakke Sho, and Wushu is one martial art I would not recommend for a heavier person.  Once you lose weight, you can learn Wushu, but it would be a struggle for an out of shape person.

As for what you can learn, that depends on what is available in your area.

You should be able to try them out for a class or two and see which you like best.

    Then sign up.

    Good luck!

    James
