Question:

Professional Movers, or DITY Move...Need Advice Please?

We'll be moving in a few months. Since we'll be going quite a distance, we were thinking about having professional movers move our things (which will be paid for by the Air Force). Would someone please describe the process? Also, we have boxes that are already packed and taped up, that have been sitting in our closet; will the movers have to unpack all our stuff so that they can pack it themselves? We've heard some good stories, but a lot of bad stories about being ripped off, stolen from, or having things left behind. I'm really debating on whether we should do this or not. If not, are there any other options for us? We're moving from Arizona, to Alaska. Please help? I appreciate your input. Thanks!

  1. no

  2. If you can afford them, you should get them.  I have moved so many times I cant even count and I always do it myself.  It takes so long and I get so tired from all the heavy lifting.  You should look online for ratings for moving companys.  There is a website, angieslist.com, that has reviews of movers and moving companies.  You can have some movers come and load the truck for you, and then drive the truck yourselves.  This way you will know all your stuff is safe during the move.  If you have packed some boxes, and they are packed well, there is no reason for the movers to unpack them.  You may feel better packing everything yourselves and then having movers load and drive the truck.  Any items that you are afraid of losing or having damaged you can pack in your car.

  3. I would say professional movers bc it saves you time unless, the company does not pack your stuff

  4. If all the stuff you've packed are not fragile, it should be ok

Since the air force will be paying for the move, you can choose to have them pack everything for you. JUST BE SURE to know which items are going and which aren't. Really ticks us off when the customers tilt their head because they don't even know if it's their stuff or their landlord's.

Any valuables you might want to pack yourselves, never fully trust every employees (learned from experience)

If not, the only thing you might want to leave it to the pros to pack are your china/glasswares, and any big furnitures, be sure to write down which room the items came from on the box

  5. Let the pro's do it.  Ive been moving with the Air Force for 18 years.  Using the pros is the best thing to do.  Depending on the carrier, some unpack taped up boxes, some just put your box in there boxes. And there FREE!!! So why not

Good Luck on your move.. And have fun in Alaska, it was so beautiful when I was there..
